With Dusty Larrazolo, Naturopathic Medicine Doctoral Student, & Jane Woodward, OLLI Instructor

Explore the evolving landscape of integrative, complementary and alternative medicine (ICAM), examining evidence-based approaches alongside holistic traditional healing practices. You will gain essential knowledge about different types of ICAM providers — from naturopathic physicians and integrative medical doctors to licensed acupuncturists and chiropractors — including their education, licensing requirements and scope of practice in California and other states.

The course also covers recent legislative changes affecting ICAM practitioners, insurance coverage realities, and practical strategies for selecting qualified providers.

Through interactive discussions and real-world case studies, learners will develop critical evaluation skills for ICAM research and claims, understand safety considerations and learn effective communication strategies with both conventional and alternative healthcare providers. This practical, balanced approach will empower you to make informed decisions about incorporating ICAM into your healthcare journey while navigating California’s complex and evolving regulatory environment.
